Professional Development for Teachers

This group aims to explore ways in which teachers in the ITEN region can improve their qualifications, teacher quality, and maintain their teaching excellence. We have a webinar next week with education specialist, Mary Burns, where she will show how teacher professional development efforts across the globe (from superstar nations like Singapore, Japan and Shanghai) to “stars” like Boston Public Schools to nations like Georgia and Ecuador that are pushing to improve teacher quality and teacher professional development—and to those who break the mold. The presentation will look at unique examples and pull together some lessons learned from these nations.

But, we would like to get the discussion going beforehand here on the Virtual Community. This group also aims to identify and analyze existing policies on professional development for teachers in the Americas.

Hello teachers!

We're inviting all professionals who work at different levels of teaching. ITEN is offering a toolkit on strategies to solve problems.

Participants in this Toolkit will be able to identify the types and characteristics of problems from an educational perspective, as well as recognize and apply strategies to solve problems in different contexts. There are no prerequisites regarding the academic level of the participants. From the teacher in preparation to the most experienced educator, they all can benefit from this toolkit.

Hi Teachers!!

Check out this video on Teacher Professional Development Across the Globe: Stars, Superstars, and Strivers.

This course is taught by Mary Burns, Education Specialist. In the video she covers how improving teachers’ qualifications teacher quality and sustaining and maintaining teaching excellence is quite probably one of the most important priorities of many nations across the globe. This is particularly true in Latin America where there have been concerted systemic efforts to improve teacher quality.

Hello everyone,

I am not from the Americas but in full support of professional development and dialogue. I hail from the tropical island of St. Lucia and hope to benefit and contribute to this group.

I was thinking of a flexible format for professional development. One where teachers share their experiences after each phase to be implemented and offer feedback and support to each other based on the student response and classroom culture which obtains.

Many times a wonderful idea is given but cannot be implemented wholesale and has to be adapted based on the context of the classroom which varies from state to state.

Hopefully, using this format teachers will develop professionally in more than one area and based on their needs. This will also lessen the chances of frustration and natural death of some programs and ideas.

Of course I foresee the need for a virtual space to manage this and possible per-arranged broadcasts to have dialogue in real time.

A penny for your thoughts :) .

Regards.
